updates

We’re almost done with the first quarter of the year, I feel like my recurring theme throughout the year will be where did the time go, it’s like the days just simply pass by. This entry again will be all over, just to post updates on what we’ve been up to.

I’ve been meaning to blog (yeah right :p) and of all the luck, one of my external HD simply stopped working. In it are most of our pictures (yeah no other backup esp with the latest ones) and my scrap files. Good thing though it’s power related to the solution would either be buying a new power supply or get on of those HD docks on the market. We are most probably going for the latter as we’d have more use for a dock than just one power supply and they cost almost the same. So yeah, until I buy that dock I won’t be able to access my scrap stuff, which is not helping my already super way behind PL (project life for those that are not familiar).

Speaking of PL, I’m hoping to catch up on this as soon as I get the dock. Mine will be more of a year theme than daily or even monthly. For now, I’m just trying to get lots of inspirations on how to actually go about it. It is digital but I’m still deciding on whether I’m going to print the pages individually and put them in a binder or have them printed in an album.

On other things, E has been enjoying his class this year. He is again in a composite class (mixed year). I find that he’s been improving in his work in class based on what he’s been telling me, I’ll probably know for sure next week when we meet up with his teacher.

ig_e_bball We’ve also enrolled him in a basketball clinic and so far he’s enjoying it.

We were also able to bring the kids to the Powerhouse Museum to check out the Wiggles and Harry Potter exhibits. esab_bigredcar

Just recently though, S got sick. She had shortness of breath and we had to take her to the emergency department at our local hospital. sab_hosp She was put on ventolin round the clock which greatly improved her breathing. Thankful also that we only had to stay one night at the hospital. Our experience at the hospital was also nice (considering the circumstance), all the doctors, staff and nurses were friendly and helpful. It was also nice that the building where the emergency, pediatrics and maternity ward was a new one.

And just as we thought that all was well, I had a call from the school last Friday to pick E up as his eyes were really red and frothy. It was just as well that I already had an appointment with the doctor for a follow-up checkup for S that morning. S’ lungs were clear (Thank God! and she just had to finish out her meds) and E’s was allergies (eye drops were prescribed). Since all was well we were able to keep our date with the dragons that night  dragon and with E’s classmate’s birthday party the next day. aleks_bigblast

2012

By tomorrow we’ll be done with the first week of school, we’ll technically it is the second week since classes were supposed to start last Friday but it was staff development day ergo pupil-free. I think E is getting used to being back at school again after the long summer break. It is somewhat good that he is still in class with his friends from last year albeit temporary so I think he quickly overcame having to wake up early again. I wonder which class he’ll be in this year, I hope it will be a good bunch of kids and of course a good teacher. I guess we’ll see by tomorrow or early next week.

How fast has time gone, in the blink of an eye January is done. I will do another post on some of what we’ve done during the holidays. Looking forward to what 2012 will bring and of course seeing family at the end of the year.

journey into digital perming

After quite some time of wanting to do this (hmm probably thinking about it on and off since last yea) I finally rustled up enough courage to book an appointment and go through with it. It being getting a digital perm. I wanted a change in hairstyle for a while now. For the most part of the past few years I would just end up getting a short haircut, growing it out, have it styled a bit then back to a short hairstyle, it was a cycle indeed. I initially planned to get the digiperm last winter when my mum was here so I can someone take care of the kids while I was at the salon but the schedule somehow didn’t work out.

Anyhoo, I had a morning appointment at a nearby Asian (Korean) salon and was ready for the roughly 2.5 hrs I will stay there. They started with washing my hair and then put some treatment for about 20mins. Then the stylist checked my hair, I think to see if it was ready for perming, and added a little more treatment for 5-10 more minutes. After that they rinsed it out and then she started the perming process, attaching big chunks of hair to the rollers in the machine, it was pretty tight, you can feel the tension of the hair so no real big movements as you sit there under the machine for 30-40 minutes. After that, we transferred to the washing station and the stylist put some treatment in my hair again and I sat/lay there for 15 minutes before the final rinse and wash. I wasn’t too sure initially when I saw the curls but eventually it was just right because I didn’t really want tight curls or ringlets.

Overall I’m pretty happy with the result, now how long it will last I’m not sure. Based on what I read on the net, it’s basically anywhere from 3 to 6 months depending on how you take care of your hair. I did have to buy shampoo and conditioner for curly hair and some styling products to aid the curls. I’ll post pics over time on how my hair is holding up. For now, here are pics of when I was getting the perm done.

daddy and me

E loves the beach, two weekends ago we went to Wollongong for the weekend to celebrate I’s birthday. During one of our pitstops we stumbled upon this beach and father and son couldn’t resist exploring among the rocks.

Our conversation last night:

E: Can I have some of your paper?

Me: here ..

(E goes to the table)

E: Mommy, how do you spell Ellie?

Me: E-L-L-I-E

After a while ..

E: Mommy, can you sticky tape this? (another piece of paper)

Me: What is this for?

E: I’ll show you later, and can you make a cover for that?

Me: Are you going to give this to Ellie?

E: No. This one here but you can’t see it. I’m going to put it in my bag.

Me: Can I just take a look?

E: (laughs) I wrote I love you!

Now to find out later if he gave it to her.

mid-autumn festival

Growing up, we’ve always celebrated the mid-autumn festival (15th day of the eight month on the Chinese calendar which usually falls either in August or September) in Manila with a dice game. I think it might have originated in the southern Fujian province in China (where most of Fil-Chi ancestors came from) and is commonly played among the Filipino-Chinese in Manila, I haven’t heard of it being played in other countries though. It is a very fun game where you throw 6 dice in a bowl and depending on the resulting combination win a prize.  (Here’s a link to how the game is played : Mooncake Dice game)

So it was a welcome treat that when S celebrated his first birthday his parents decided to host a dice game. For Ichi and my turns we had E throw the dice for us and we were completely happy with the prizes that we were getting but lo and behold after a few rounds who would turn out to grab the top prize? (too bad for the dad’s friend who had thrown a combination for first prize – E’s was much higher) And he was so proud that he won it for me!

kindy bbq

Last Sunday we went to the kindy BBQ over at E’s school. It was organised by the school parents for all the kindy and new families this school year. In an effort to make the families at least be “familiar” with each other, after all we will be going through the same journey for the next7 years. The RSVP was due a little more than a week before the BBQ with the class parents also organising an order for the BBQ lunch. A few days before the event though, we got a note back saying that with the number of RSVPs that was received it would now be a BYO picnic and they returned the monies for the BBQ order. As it turns out only 11 out of the 80 kindy families expressed interest in coming to the get together. I mean, how low a turn out is that?! Most of the families that went were those of E’s class (KR) and KP (kindy purple). There were a few from the other class too. It was good though, we got to meet some of the other parents of E’s classmates and got to chat. It is just sad that not a lot really took the time for it. Granted that it was a Sunday but still. Anyways, it was a good afternoon.
