mid-autumn festival

Growing up, we’ve always celebrated the mid-autumn festival (15th day of the eight month on the Chinese calendar which usually falls either in August or September) in Manila with a dice game. I think it might have originated in the southern Fujian province in China (where most of Fil-Chi ancestors came from) and is commonly played among the Filipino-Chinese in Manila, I haven’t heard of it being played in other countries though. It is a very fun game where you throw 6 dice in a bowl and depending on the resulting combination win a prize.  (Here’s a link to how the game is played : Mooncake Dice game)

So it was a welcome treat that when S celebrated his first birthday his parents decided to host a dice game. For Ichi and my turns we had E throw the dice for us and we were completely happy with the prizes that we were getting but lo and behold after a few rounds who would turn out to grab the top prize? (too bad for the dad’s friend who had thrown a combination for first prize – E’s was much higher) And he was so proud that he won it for me!

right to suffrage

Yesterday, millions of Filipinos trooped to the polling places to exercise their right to suffrage. With us presently being in a another country, sadly we were not able to do so. A lot has been written about this particular election from the different candidates to it being the first automated polls of the country. But one thing is for sure, we need change. Our generation may not feel the change now but if there really is, our kids and their kids would be the recipients so I really hope it’s a positive one. And that the country doesn’t go from worse to really worse. Ooh, one good thing about this election is that we’ve heard and read lots of news that even though there were kinks in the automated polling process with some machines bogged down very early in the morning, you can see the people’s desire for the change, they waited in looong queues for hours just to be able to vote. Mabuhay!

Ok, back to regular programming now …

2010 calendar part2

I finally finished the second half of the calendar yesterday and the directory included today. The last thing would be the calendar cover. Still waiting on some photos for that and hopefully before the end of the week everything is done.
