end of year

E’s class had their end of year party last Sunday. Everyone surely enjoyed the day from the kids to the parents. It was really nice to see majority of  E’s classmates there. I can’t believe that it has been a year, it really seems like they’ve just started school. Today was their last day and they had a little send off for the year 6 students.

It was a good year in kindy and here’s to another good year in year 1.

daddy and me

E loves the beach, two weekends ago we went to Wollongong for the weekend to celebrate I’s birthday. During one of our pitstops we stumbled upon this beach and father and son couldn’t resist exploring among the rocks.

… not for me though

Our conversation last night:

E: Can I have some of your paper?

Me: here ..

(E goes to the table)

E: Mommy, how do you spell Ellie?

Me: E-L-L-I-E

After a while ..

E: Mommy, can you sticky tape this? (another piece of paper)

Me: What is this for?

E: I’ll show you later, and can you make a cover for that?

Me: Are you going to give this to Ellie?

E: No. This one here but you can’t see it. I’m going to put it in my bag.

Me: Can I just take a look?

E: (laughs) I wrote I love you!

Now to find out later if he gave it to her.

spare or strike

A fellow kindy mum suggested we take the kids to bowling. There was a short ad on the school newsletter about the after school special they had for students. So last Tuesday off we went to the local bowling alley. The kids were all excited even though they didn’t know what bowling was. After explaining what to do and helping them with the bowling ramp, each of them couldn’t wait for their turn.

After one or two frames, all of them positioned the bowling ramp and placed the balls by themselves.

I was surprised at how well E did. I had fun seeing him figure out where to place the ramp to get the most pins. The final score ..

.. which was quickly forgotten when we handed them the arcade tokens. Here’s to more bowling playdates.

trick or treat

20101030_e-devil1

For halloween this year, I wanted E to have the trick or treating experience. We grew up knowing about halloween from movies and such but never got to experience it. These days though in Manila, a lot of the subdivisions hold the event and have the kids in the neighborhood come to trick or treat and even award the best decorated house. Since he couldn’t do the actual trick or treating at the different homes (didn’t see any homes decorated near us and the ones that I found on the net were a bit far to drive to) we ended bringing him to the Toys R’ Us Trick R’ Treat event. They did some colouring of either a halloween pumpkin or a witch, had a few games and went around the store to trick or treat. Most of the girls were in princess costumes, the boys in character costumes. At the end, the host pulled me aside to tell me that E won best dressed and they were going to give a prize. Going around the different stores to find his devil get-up was worth it after all haha!

mid-autumn festival

Growing up, we’ve always celebrated the mid-autumn festival (15th day of the eight month on the Chinese calendar which usually falls either in August or September) in Manila with a dice game. I think it might have originated in the southern Fujian province in China (where most of Fil-Chi ancestors came from) and is commonly played among the Filipino-Chinese in Manila, I haven’t heard of it being played in other countries though. It is a very fun game where you throw 6 dice in a bowl and depending on the resulting combination win a prize.  (Here’s a link to how the game is played : Mooncake Dice game)

So it was a welcome treat that when S celebrated his first birthday his parents decided to host a dice game. For Ichi and my turns we had E throw the dice for us and we were completely happy with the prizes that we were getting but lo and behold after a few rounds who would turn out to grab the top prize? (too bad for the dad’s friend who had thrown a combination for first prize – E’s was much higher) And he was so proud that he won it for me!
